Today was another travel day – making our way north. I chose Virginia Beach as our next stop.. only 3-4 hours up the coast. I picked out a hotel right on the water so that we could do more fun beach activities right outside our sliding glass door.

I final good-bye to Hatteras during my early morning dog walk.

On the way we stopped on Roanoke Island. I wanted to see the location of the original Lost Colony.
These are the earthworks of the first two attempts by Walter Raleigh to settle in the New World. A group of settlers were dropped off on the island in 1587. When a relief ship returned 3 years later, everyone had disappeared. To this day, no one is certain of their fate.

Heading down to the seaside to get a sense of where the ships coming to America might have landed.

After our visit to Roanoke, I wanted to head north to Kitty Hawk to see where the Wright Brothers first flew their airplane. Unfortunately, the heavens opened up and this was my view for the rest of the afternoon.
We didn’t stop to see the monument.. it was raining heavily with lighting all over and nobody wanted to get out with their umbrellas and fumble toward a marble monolith.
The rest of the day was a slog – often going 30MPH to keep the white highway lines in view just in front of the windshield.

We did stop for a lunch – outside covered porch. The restaurant had a “dog menu” in addition to the one for humans. Hamburger and carrots served on a frisbee. This went over very well with Winston.
We arrived to Virginia Beach later that afternoon and spent the rest of the evening looking out on a rainy beach, watching Big Bang Theory reruns and drinking boxed wine until bed time.
