Saturday morning was calm and pleasant – we only have a short drive planned today to Sheffield, and since it was Saturday and we’ve now been on the road for a week, it was a good time to recharge batteries (both literally and figuratively), re-pack duffel bags and suitcases, clean up camera lenses and electronic toys & etc. Everyone slept in and I had a chance to take care of some work emails while enjoying morning coffee. The kids are currently watching Saturday morning cartoons.
Leaving Liverpool, we drove through Manchester and over a mountain range into Sheffield. We then headed south to find Sherwood Forest, the stomping grounds of Robin Hood.

Typical texture of these old oaks.. most of Sherwood Forest was cut down in the Middle Ages.. it took almost 2000 old growth oaks from these forests to make one galleon.
During the times of Robin Hood (1080-1120ish) there was more than 100,000 acres. Now, only about 1,000 acres remain.
Many of the old oaks are dying from disease, which kills them from the inside out.

St. Mary’s church. This building is actually the second built on this site. This one was completed in 1185. It is reputed to be the church where Robin Hood married Maid Marian.
